Outfit notes: William wears a plain black suit that is most likely the Reaper standard. He has multiple pairs of shoes, including a pair that resembles Victorian work boots (manga), a set of plain lace-up shoes (anime) and a pair of monkstraps (one of Yana’s artworks), all black.
He wears a shirt with a standing collar. His outfit is passable as semi-standard Victorian wear, even though the Reapers are known for being anachronistic.

In the circus arc, he wore a suit almost identical to his usual one… if not for the major difference in colour scheme. With the Book of Circus anime, his first suit has been redesigned as having a glittering(like sequined) yellow jacket, with the polka-dot tie’s colours confirmed as red and white, a green waistcoat, and the purple starry trousers remaining the same as seen on the back of volume 8. As of now, there is no way to know whether his second suit (completely starry, unknown colour scheme) will make an appearance in the anime.

Other notes:

  • William’s mode of referring to demons is very specific; “akuma-fuzei”, which literally translates to “demon-aura”. He’s implying the person he’s speaking to is one with the aura of a demon. Ronald has quoted a unnamed member of management using this terminology during the Campania arc, and it’s not farfetched to assume the complaining Ronald was anticipating was complaining from William.
The only other character to use the “-fuzei” term and not be quoting another is Undertaker, using “gaijyuu-fuzei”, or “wild animal-aura” to refer to Sebastian in chapter 61.
  • William is the only character the Undertaker has ever referred to by their real name(s01e23- “That fault-finder, Will or whatever his name is…”) , and not a title or alias in any of the manga, anime, musicals, etc.
  • Though William’s catchphrase “mattaku” is translated to “honestly” by fans and written as “honestly” in the vast majority of fan-works, the official translation uses “good grief”, “good heavens”, “I say”, “really”, or “goodness”. Just about anything that isn’t “honestly”.
  • He was confirmed by Yana to be Grelle’s “honmei”. Translated as “true love”, it literally means “favourite” or “heart’s desire”, and means Grelle has romantic feelings for William. (24th April 2010, Devil’s 6th Day blog).
However, nothing has been confirmed of what William feels in return, be it affection or distaste. He has never reacted well to Grelle’s advances.
  • The Korean personification of Death, 저승사자, is known as “the Netherworld Emissary, depicted as a stern and ruthless bureaucrat in service of Great King Yŏmna (염라대왕), who escorts all—good or evil—from the land of the living to the netherworld when the time comes”. This is a concept which may have been an inspiration to Yana in William’s creation, but also may be something Yana has no knowledge of.

I absolutely love old books

That is part of the beauty of all literature. You discover that your longings are universal longings, that you’re not lonely and isolated from anyone. You belong.
